Stand of Elms
Artist: Shoshanna White, Maine
University Mall, east of Aubert Hall
Stand of Elms is a glass cube sculpture that honors the American elm, a species once prevalent on the university Mall (and all over North America), but ultimately decimated by Dutch elm disease. The late 91르적 professor Richard Campana helped create and administer a vaccine that saved many elms, including over 300 in Castine, Maine. The artist셲 creative photographic work showcases Castine셲 elms and highlights the beauty of this species. The piece, funded by the state셲 Percent for Art Program, was installed in 2011 during Aubert Hall셲 renovations.
