This interactive, hands-on workshop is designed to give you concrete, immediately applicable strategies to make the most group work.聽 Modeled in an Active Learning Classroom (ALC), which relies heavily on group work, this workshop will be relevant for anyone working with student groups and/or teaching in active learning classrooms.

• Hands-on Experience: You鈥檒l experience active learning in groups as a student, so you can immediately see how strategies like gallery walks, jigsaws, and think-pair-share will work in your own classroom.
• Effective Group Work: Discover and practice inclusive and equitable strategies for group work and discussions.
• Practical Assessment Tools: Learn to design in-class activities that effectively assess student learning in an active environment.
• Troubleshooting & Best Practices: Navigate the strengths and challenges of different active learning approaches.

NOTE: This orientation to teaching in an ALCs will be held in Ferland Room 337. This is an active learning classroom in Ferland, the Engineering building, NOT Fernald, where CITL is located.

Student response devices like iClicker are often treated as simple attendance trackers or pop-quiz tools鈥攂ut their true value lies in transforming passive lectures into dynamic, interactive learning spaces.

This interactive session skips the technical setup and dives straight into pedagogy: how to use real-time polling to deepen student understanding, address misconceptions on the fly, and build a culture of active learning.

• Questions That Drive Thinking: Learn how to craft conceptual and diagnostic questions that go beyond simple recall to trigger critical thinking and curiosity.
• Peer Instruction in Action: Practice the “vote-discuss-revote” method to ignite meaningful peer-to-peer debates and let students learn from each other.
• Real-Time Pivots: Discover how to read live polling data to spot common misconceptions immediately and adjust your teaching in the moment.

Note: This workshop focuses entirely on teaching strategies and activity design, not software installation or technical troubleshooting. Both new and experienced polling users are welcome!

We鈥檒l show you how to turn a dry, policy-heavy document into an engaging, accessible, and friendly roadmap鈥攚ithout burning yourself out or sacrificing required campus policies.

In one hour, we will tackle:

• Ditching the Legalistic Vibe: Swap cold, punitive policy language for a supportive, welcoming tone that sets expectations and builds rapport from Day 1.
• Protecting Your Sanity: Draft clear, boundary-setting policies for emails, late work, and grading that keep your inbox manageable all semester.
• The Policy Stuff: Learn what is mandatory institutional text vs recommended and explore ways to include this info without hijacking your course intro.
• A Quick Formatting Review: Simple, accessible formatting tricks to make your syllabus easy to scan, read, and navigate on any device.

The Graduate Teaching Academy (GTA) is a semester-long learning community for those interested in preparing for careers that involve teaching, inside and outside of academia. The GTA, which is聽open to ALL graduate students and post-docs, is a place for learning about effective teaching practices and strategies, connecting with peers, and developing your own understandings about the purpose of higher education.

While fall term is just starting, spring will be here before we know it, and with it comes the deadline for Title II requirements for course materials. Join this informal discussion to review what is actually expected of you, what the timeline looks like, and how to get ahead of it. We will share practical recommendations to help you prepare gradually, share supports and resources available, and leave plenty of room for open Q&A. Virtual attendance can be provided, in-person is preferred.

Quiet, protected co-working time to make progress on your class prep.

Need uninterrupted time to finish course prep, draft rubrics, or get through grading? Teaching Focus Hours offers a dedicated, distraction-free space to turn intention into finished work鈥攔ight alongside your colleagues.

This is a high-focus, low-distraction work session modeled after writing accountability groups. We spend 10 minutes setting goals, 60 minutes in silent focus, and 5 minutes wrapping up. A strict, predictable rhythm allows you to enter and leave as your schedule allows without disrupting your colleagues.

Co-facilitated by Dr. Dawn Emerson, Assistant Professor of Kinesiology and Physical Education.
