Alternative Grading Approaches – Community of Practice (In-Person)

Explore six distinct alternative grading frameworks—including specifications, standards-based, labor-based, and contract grading—designed to make course assessment more meaningful, equitable, and transparent. Over six one-hour meetings, we will discover how alternative grading models directly mitigate AI misuse while satisfying Title II compliance by focusing squarely on measurable learning outcomes. Supported by light pre-work and discipline-specific examples, participants will engage in hands-on drafting to redesign their own course assignments week by week. The program concludes with a collaborative wrap-up session, positioning faculty to fully scale their redesigned courses in the upcoming .Ìý

Alternate Mondays at 3:00-4:00pm. In-Person.

Take one session or them all, Registration is required.

  • September 21st: Specifications (“Specs”) Grading
  • October 5th: Standards-Based / Competency-Based Grading
  • October 19th: Labor-Based & Process-Oriented Grading
  • November 2nd: Contract Based Grading
  • November 16th: Authentic & Performance-Based Assessment
  • November 30: Portfolio & Reflective Ungrading

For those who participate in the full series:

  • December 14th: Faculty bring one assignment or syllabus module they redesigned during Meetings 1–6 for peer feedback.
