Originally named Wellington Plantation after its first owner, the town of Monticello was incorporated in 1846 and derived its name from Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia estate. () The town’s economy is based on agriculture, primarily potatoes, and the beautiful northern branch of the Meduxnekeag River winds its way through the surrounding farmland.
