Reducing Marine Debris at the Source: Finding Alternatives to Single-Use Plastic
A Research-to-Application Symposium
University of Maine researchers and Maine Sea Grant partners will present findings and prototypes developed with support from a NOAA National Sea Grant Marine Debris Challenge Grant. Guest speakers will be invited to share alternative products, reusable food packaging systems, and case studies in developing alternatives to single-use plastic using biodegradable materials from forests, oceans, and agricultural bi-products.

Program Highlights
- Day 1 (Monday, Sept 21): Focuses on Materials Research, New Product Development, and Consumer Engagement. Highlights include talks and panel sessions by research and industry experts, a Poster Session, and a Research Prototype Exhibition.
- Day 2 (Tuesday, Sept 22): Focuses on Case Studies, Commercialization, and Policy Interventions. Highlights include a hands-on learning activity and a Policy & Intervention Roundtable discussing the future of single-use plastics.
Attendee Logistics
- Meals: Lunch will be provided on both Monday and Tuesday at 12:30 PM and an evening reception/dinner will be provided on Monday after the poster session.
