Course Structure

Basic Course

The Basic Course is designed for first- and second-year students and carries no military obligation for non-scholarship cadets. Through MSL 100- and 200-level courses, cadets build foundational skills in leadership, communication, time management and teamwork while also participating in regular physical training.

Students with prior military service or qualifying Army training may be eligible to receive credit for some or all of the Basic Course requirements.

Basic Course classes:

  • Leadership Lab (MSL 100)
  • Leadership and Physical Fitness (MSL 105)
  • Foundations of Leadership (MSL 101)
  • Basic Leadership (MSL 102)
  • Individual Leadership Studies (MSL 201)
  • Leadership and Teamwork (MSL 202)

Advanced Course

The Advanced Course includes MSL 300- and 400-level coursework for third- and fourth-year cadets preparing to commission as Army officers. Cadets take on greater responsibility within the battalion, developing and applying their leadership skills through increasingly advanced training and planning.

Third-year cadets focus on developing their leadership abilities and preparing for required summer training, while fourth-year cadets take a larger role in planning training, leading the battalion and preparing for commissioning and their first Army assignments.*

Advanced Course classes:

  • Leadership and Problem Solving (MSL 301)
  • Leadership and Ethics (MSL 302)
  • The Evolution of American Warfare (MSL 350)
  • Leadership and Management (MSL 401)
  • Officership (MSL 402)
  • The Evolution of American Warfare (MSL 350)

Contracting and Commissioning

Cadets who intend to commission as Army officers typically contract with Army ROTC as they progress into the Advanced Course. Contracted cadets have additional training and program requirements and are expected to meet Army ROTC and Cadet Command standards.

Contracting carries a military service obligation following commissioning in the Active Army, Army National Guard or Army Reserve. The length and type of service commitment varies depending on the cadet鈥檚 contract and commissioning path.
