Macaroni and cheese is a staple in many parts of the U.S., but try out this recipe from <a href=\"https:\/\/newengland.com\/today\/food\/baked-macaroni-and-cheese-with-sausage-and-tomato\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New England Today<\/a> for a special baked macaroni and cheese that has tomatoes and sausage in it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Macaroni and Cheese with Tomatoes and Sausage<\/strong> \u2013 <em>New England Today<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ingredients<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2 links of Italian sausage, casings removed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6 cups milk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6 tablespoons unsalted butter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1\/2 cup all-purpose flour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 teaspoons salt<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1\/4 teaspoon nutmeg<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1\/2teaspoon black pepper<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1\/4\u00a0teaspoon cayenne pepper<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 cups grated cheddar cheese<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 cups grated Gruy\u00e8re cheese<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 pound elbow macaroni<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 tomatoes, sliced thin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Directions<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 Celsius). Butter a 3-quart casserole dish and set aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a medium skillet, brown the sausages in a little olive oil, using a wooden spoon to break them up into bite-sized pieces. Set aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prepare the macaroni according to the package directions for al dente. Drain and toss with a small amount of olive oil (so it won\u2019t stick), then set aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a medium saucepan, warm the milk over medium heat \u2013 do not let it boil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the milk is warming, place the butter in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat. When butter bubbles, add flour. Whisk butter and flour together for 1 minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slowly pour hot milk into butter-flour mixture. Continue cooking, whisking constantly, until the mixture bubbles and becomes thick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remove the pan from the heat. Stir in salt, nutmeg, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and cheeses.
