The town thrived thanks to its fertile soil and abundant forests for lumber, and was later boosted by the coming of the Sandy River Railroad that passed through town. The Strong Wood Products Incorporated factory located in town was once the world&#8217;s leading producer of toothpicks. Strong was also home to Maine&#8217;s first cheese factory!<\/p>\n<h4>Activities<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainetrailfinder.com\/trails\/trail\/sandy-river-race-course\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sandy River<\/strong><\/a> <em>Rte 145, Strong, ME 04983<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>The stretch of the Sandy River from Phillips to Farmington, passing through Strong, is excellent for canoe trips, providing scenic views and a mix of calm and moderately swift water.
