Attacked by Captain John Lovewell in 1725 during Dummer&#8217;s War, the tribe abandoned the area and fled to Canada. The township combined a grant made by the Massachusetts General Court to Fryeburg Academy, Foster&#8217;s Gore and a strip from Brownfield. Several settlers came from Andover, Massachusetts. It was incorporated as Denmark on February 20, 1807. &#8221;\u00a0 It is a lovely area with &#8220;Moose Pond Brook and the Saco River. The largest of its many ponds is Moose Pond, which is about 8 miles (13 km) long.&#8221; It currently has a population of almost 1200 (2020 census).<\/p>\n<h3>Fun Facts<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The town was named after the country Denmark to show solidarity, because Copenhagen had been attacked by the British Navy in 1801 and 1807, just before the town&#8217;s naming (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Denmark,_Maine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Source<\/strong><\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/undiscoveredmaine\/western-maine\/oxford\/\">Return to Oxford County Lakes Page<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to Denmark!
