The name was changed to Grand Isle in 1872. It commemorates the large and fertile island within the town and in the middle of the St. John River just south of the village of Lille.&#8221;\u00a0 It was settled in 1805 originally by Acadians fleeing from the British.<\/p>\n<p>According to the 2020 census, it has a population of roughly 366 and a collection of small businesses.
