The town was named after Ohio native, Senator, and abolitionist John Sherman. In the late 1800&#8217;s Sherman had two sawmills, a grist mill, and a starch factory.<\/p>\n<p>Sherman was formed during the Civil War; the town sent 113 men to war, of which 34 died. A memorial was made in 1982 for the six Caldwell Brothers who fought in the Civil War; three of the brothers died in the war.
