After other settlers bought the land and developed the area, the town of Smyrna was incorporated in 1839, named after Smyrna, Turkey. Agriculture and lumber were the main industries, and a railroad station made Smyrna a local hub of business activity. Although the railroad has slowed down, Smyrna remains an industrious little town to this day.
