Welcome to Jackman!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jackman<\/a> is a town in Somerset County and is known as the “Switzerland of Maine.” It is north of the Western Mountains, in the Moose River Valley. Companies privately own most of the forestland here, which makes for a lot of options when it comes to lodging and dining. Jackman has a lot of historical settings to give you a great feel of how it used to be back in the day! It welcomes you to its community!<\/p>\n

Starting in the early part of the 19th century, entrepreneurs in what is now Maine wanted to build a road that traveled north toward Canada to create a market for their goods. By 1810 the road began to be built, following along near the trail that Benedict Arnold took 30 years prior. In the 1830s, Captain James Jackman worked on the road as it extended to Canada. The settlement that came to be known as Jackman is named after him.<\/p>\n

The settlement was slow as the decades went on. In 1888, the Canada Pacific Railroad passed through the town and kick-started the lumber industry. Lumber continues to be a major tenet of the town’s economy.<\/p>\n
