Home to the towns of Fryeburg, Norway, Paris, and many other lakeside camping and resort areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/undiscoveredmaine\/western-maine\/oxford-county-mountains\/\"><strong>Oxford County Mountains<\/strong><\/a>: This area is dominated by the foothills of the White Mountains, including many sizeable peaks over 4,000ft tall! The resort town of Bethel is the gateway into these mountains, including Sunday River Resort in nearby Newry, while Rumford stands as a testament to the region&#8217;s history as a center for mill production.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Facts 91¸£Àû the Western Maine Region:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-8001 size-thumbnail\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/undiscoveredmaine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/527\/2019\/09\/OlympiaSnowWomanBethelMaine-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Olympia Snow Woman, Bethel, Maine Western Maine\" class=\"wp-image-8001\" srcset=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/undiscoveredmaine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/527\/2019\/09\/OlympiaSnowWomanBethelMaine-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/umaine.edu\/undiscoveredmaine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/527\/2019\/09\/OlympiaSnowWomanBethelMaine-32x32.jpg 32w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Olympia Snow<br>Woman, Bethel, Maine<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northernforestcanoetrail.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Northern Forest Canoe Trail<\/a> is a phenomenal paddling route spanning 740 miles and covering 4 New England states, including western Maine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In winter 2008, the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce built the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bethelmaine.com\/snow-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Olympia Snow Woman<\/a>,&#8221; which made the Guinness Book of World Records as the world&#8217;s tallest snow-woman at 11 stories high. Before that, Bethel held the world record for the largest snowman in 1999, known as the &#8220;Angus, King of the Mountain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/4000footers.com\/range_highpeaks.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">High Peaks<\/a>&#8221; is a large region located in Franklin County that holds 8 out of 14 of Maine&#8217;s 4,000-foot high mountains.
