Welcome to Island Falls!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Three men, Levi Sewall, Nehemiah Alexander, and Jesse Craig, traveled North in 1842 to find the perfect spot to build a house. After talking with Mr. Jonas Drury, who told them about a nearby area known as Island Falls, they decided it was a magnificent place to build a house. Levi Sewall’s home became the first in Island Falls. The area began getting further settled in 1852.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first post office was located at Mr. Sewall’s home. The slot in the kitchen door is still there today. The home was recognized by the National Historic Registry in 1970. Theodore Roosevelt and Bill Sewall (direct descendent of Levi) developed a lifelong friendship that began when Roosevelt attended Harvard. <\/span><\/p>\n

Theodore Roosevelt took an interest in sportsmanlike activities, such as hunting and fishing, around Mattawamkeag Lake in Island Falls. It has been said that Teddy Roosevelt would traverse daily along the Mattawamkeag River till he hit a gorgeous area, now known as Bible Point,\u00a0 where he would stop to read his Bible. Bible Point is a state historical park dedicated to President Roosevelt!<\/span><\/p>\n
