It could be a remote piece of land or a new field of study, but if someone calls it &#8220;the frontier,&#8221; you are challenged to explore it.&#8221; (vocabulary.com) Therefore it seemed appropriate to use that word for our DownEast regions.<\/p>\n<p>The DownEast Easterly Frontier includes the towns of Machias, Cutler, Eastport, and Lubec. So, the blueberries make sense. Machias is smack in the middle of Maine&#8217;s blueberry belt (the state&#8217;s world&#8217;s top producer of wild blueberries). As for rebellion, well, that happened a while back. In 1775, locals in the newly minted town were told of the Revolutionary War battles of Lexington and Concord. They weren&#8217;t happy. So when a small Royal Navy ship demanded Machias provide lumber to be used by British forces down in Boston, locals decided on a different plan. In what became the first naval battle of the American Revolution, Machias Patriots sailed after the little British ship, fought its crew, and captured it. Today, you can visit <a class=\"ignore\" href=\"https:\/\/visitmaine.com\/organization\/burnham-tavern-museum\/5ca2500a-2715-4df1-9ce3-185dbf8dc4ba\">Burnham Tavern<\/a> (built-in 1770), where the Patriots came up with their audacious plan to take on the British.&#8221; visitmaine.com<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The ancient Christian Celts \u00adbelieved in the existence of supernatural spaces between heaven and earth \u2014 &#8220;thin places,&#8221; they called them, where the distance between the two realms, between the sacred and the profane, collapses&#8230; the tides are the source of Lubec&#8217;s pull.
