The Flagstaff and Dead River villages were lovely mountain towns with farms, schools, and general stores. The villages disappeared when the valley was flooded to bring in hydroelectric power.

- Everyone wants to see a moose. We have found that the best place to do this is to take a drive down Route 16 from Stratton to Rangeley at either dusk or dawn. We often see moose along this road, but be careful!
