The town of Sherman was settled in 1832 and incorporated in January 1862. The town was named after Ohio native, Senator, and abolitionist John Sherman. In the late 1800’s Sherman had two sawmills, a grist mill, and a starch factory.

Sherman was formed during the Civil War; the town sent 113 men to war, of which 34 died. A memorial was made in 1982 for the six Caldwell Brothers who fought in the Civil War; three of the brothers died in the war. This memorial can be found near the Sherman Public Library.
