{"id":360,"date":"2018-02-27T11:14:43","date_gmt":"2018-02-27T16:14:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/research-compliance\/?page_id=360"},"modified":"2024-08-06T14:05:08","modified_gmt":"2024-08-06T18:05:08","slug":"deadlines-submission-applications-approval","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/research-compliance\/human-subjects\/deadlines-submission-applications-approval\/","title":{"rendered":"IRB Deadlines for Submission of Applications for Approval"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Only applications that require&nbsp;<b>Full Board Review<\/b> must be submitted by the <strong>first Friday of every month.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some examples of research that require Full Board Review are listed below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>studies involving vulnerable populations such as prisoners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>studies that are more than minimal risk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>studies involving sensitive topics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>complex studies that may require the expertise of more than one board member<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>An application submitted on the first Friday of the month will be reviewed at that month\u2019s meeting (the IRB typically meets during the third week of the month). Please note: assignment to an agenda is <b>not<\/b>&nbsp;<b>automatic<\/b> and may vary depending on the completeness of the submission, complexity of the project, how quickly the researcher responds to comments during the pre-review, and attaining quorum at the monthly meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An investigator may request an expedited review of their application if the proposed research activity is within one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/ohrp\/regulations-and-policy\/guidance\/categories-of-research-expedited-review-procedure-1998\/index.html\">categories eligible for expedited review (external link)<\/a>. <b>Applications requesting expedited review may be submitted at any time.<\/b> The IRB aims to review and send comments back to investigators within ten working days (please note: this does not mean that you will have IRB approval in ten days).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Principal Investigators (PIs) are advised to submit their applications well in advance of the proposed start date or the continuing review date of the study.<\/strong>&nbsp;An exact IRB approval timeline cannot be provided as it will vary from one submission to another, and may also vary due to periods of high submission volume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/research-compliance\/human-subjects\/#contact\">contact the IRB office<\/a>&nbsp;if you have questions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Only applications that require&nbsp;Full Board Review must be submitted by the first Friday of every month.
