Sex is assigned at birth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sexual Orientation<\/strong> is a term used to describe one\u2019s pattern of emotional, romantic and\/or sexual attraction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sample Questions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are sample questions and response options for gender identity, sex, and sexual orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>What is your current gender identity? Therefore, it is important to protect this information, especially when recorded as identifiable. Investigators must ensure that research subjects provide this information in a location where they are comfortable and that ensures their privacy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All study documents (<em>including surveys<\/em>) should use gender-neutral language, avoiding gendered terms (e.g., mailman, chairman) and gendered pronouns (he, she, he\/she).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gendered terms should be replaced with non-gendered versions (e.g., mail carrier instead of mailman or chairperson instead of chairman).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sentences using gendered pronouns should either use gender-neutral pronouns (e.g., singular they as in \u201cEach subject will receive their gift card upon completing the study.\u201d) or be reworded entirely to avoid such pronoun use (e.g., \u201cSubjects will receive their gift card upon completing the study.\u201d).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid presuming roles whenever possible. For example, say \u201cspouse\/partner\u201d instead of \u201chusband\/wife\u201d.<br>Incorporate gender neutral diagrams in research materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not assume pronouns when interacting with a subject until they identify a preference.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Train your research team members to increase their comfort level in asking and answering sensitive questions about gender and sexual orientation from subjects.
