Human Subject Payment Guidelines

• University of Maine researchers may provide cash (or cash equivalents [incentives], including gift cards, meal money, apparel, etc.) to human subjects if the protocol has been approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB).
• Researchers must work with University of Maine System (UMS)  (@maine.edu login required) when paying human subjects and follow their payment and reporting requirements for UMS employees, as well as non-employees.
• It is the responsibility of the researcher (not the IRB) to make appropriate funding arrangements and follow UMS Policies.
