{"id":2258,"date":"2020-04-07T14:05:49","date_gmt":"2020-04-07T18:05:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/oira\/?p=2258"},"modified":"2020-04-08T09:29:01","modified_gmt":"2020-04-08T13:29:01","slug":"spring-online-student-evaluations-of-teaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/oira\/spring-online-student-evaluations-of-teaching\/","title":{"rendered":"Spring Online Student Evaluations of Teaching\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over the past three years, since the Blue portal was introduced for online evaluations, 91福利 has seen an increase in the number of academic units choosing to go completely online for their student evaluations of teaching (SETs).\u00a0 By fall 2019, approximately 70% of units had voluntarily adopted using exclusively online SETs. With the sudden move to remote instruction this semester, all SETS will be conducted online using the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blue<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> portal for the spring 2020 semester. (This will be for this semester only.) However, given the extraordinary circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic this semester, the process will differ.\u00a0 AFUM has issued the following update:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>For the Spring 2020 semester, the results of the Student Evaluation shall not be placed in the personnel file or used for any negative action. Neither will signed comments be placed in the personnel file.<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>For purposes of evaluation, reappointment, or promotion, or tenure that includes the Spring 2020 semester, the University shall consider all work evaluated to have been completed in 1 fewer semester. This provision does not change any contractual deadlines.<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We want to assure faculty that we will be adhering to these new guidelines while administering SETs this semester. Copies of SET reports will not be shared with academic units &#8212; only the faculty members teaching each course.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For those new to the online SET,\u00a0 we encourage reviewing the resources available on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/oira\/faculty-services\/online-course-evaluations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OIRA website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. In particular, we recommend\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/oira\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/502\/2019\/12\/Blue_Faculty_Handout_2019FA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">this handout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which summarizes the process. In short, there are three different tasks involved: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Question Personalization \u2013 faculty are given the opportunity to add up to 10 of their own questions to the questionnaire. These will be supplementary to the standard question set.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student access \u2013 for the two weeks leading up to the last day of classes, students will have access to fill out their evaluations.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Response Rate Monitoring \u2013 faculty can monitor response rates in real-time for each of their courses. The monitoring period corresponds with the time students have access to complete their evaluations (last two weeks of classes).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">See Table 1 for the dates associated with each of the tasks described above.
