OIRA has welcomed two new staff members over the past six months.ÌýÌý

Simona Mitevska is a new Research Analyst.Ìý Simona recently earned two Master’s degrees from the University of Maine: An M.S. in Economics and an M.A. in Global Policy. Simona brings to the office a wealth of quantitative and data analysis skills and has already jumped in fulfilling numerous data requests, building dashboards in PowerBI, and automating reports using R.ÌýÌý

Nate Flint is a new Evaluation Specialist. Nate came to 91¸£Àû from Chicago, where he was the Director of Analytics at National Louis University.Ìý Nate is coordinating the UMS-wide assessment of the Student Success and Retention Initiatives for UMS Transforms.Ìý So far, Nate has played the lead role in coordinating an assessment process for the Research Learning Experience pilots, as well as implementing the First-Destination Survey across all UMS campuses.

OIRA is thrilled to have Simona and Nate join us!

Average fall and spring response rates for online student evaluations of teaching at 91¸£Àû over the last several years are presented in the table below. While there was an initial rebound in response rates after the first COVID semester of spring 2020, rates were the lowest recorded in spring 2022. Additional response rate information, such as breakdown by course level and instructional modes, can be found on the OIRA course evaluations website (bottom of page).

OIRA continues to expand our Interactive Data offerings with both public and internal dashboards. Ìý

Our is the latest update to our public report offerings, which now include an in-depth view of fall, spring and summer terms. The term overview provides you a snapshot of enrollment data for one selected term. For a longitudinal view, the Enrollment Trends tab provides enrollment trends over the last 10 years. The dimension filter on the Enrollment TrendsÌý tab offers disaggregation by such demographics as age, sex, race/ethnicity, first-generation status, and more. The Enrollment by Major tab provides enrollment by major for a particular term, while the Major Trends tab offers enrollment trends by major over the last 5 years. Finally, with our new map feature you can see where our enrolled students resided before coming to 91¸£Àû using world, U.S., and Maine maps.Ìý

Filters are available to drill down into the data using a number of metrics: Campus (UM/UMM), Career (Undergraduate/Graduate), college, department, degree, plan with degree level, and Online Program. Use the available buttons located on the left side to switch between visuals and tables for easy analysis.

Finally, visit the Power BI Resources page to find video and PDF tutorials, report guides, and tools for accessing Power BI dashboards.

We prepared all summer for a major update of the Blue student evaluation system that was implemented at the end of August. Many of the changes to the platform are behind-the-scenes and will help us manage the system. Some of the changes will be apparent to faculty and students, most notably the more modern presentation of the surveys (see comparison examples below).

For faculty interested in conducting research related to student evaluations we wanted to let you know of a funding opportunity from Explorance Blue, the maker of our student evaluation system. Each year, Blue commits $100,000 for research projects using course evaluation data or other student experience data to improve teaching effectiveness or student success. The application deadline for this year is December 7, 2022. Please see the for more information and to apply.

The Research Learning Experience initiative, part of the University of Maine System’s student success and retention strategies, continues to grow! In Fall 2022, 511 students across five different campuses are registered in RLE courses, more than twice as many students registered as last year.Ìý OIRA has been working with others at 91¸£Àû and across the system to develop an assessment plan for the expanded pilot, which will include analyses of enrollment trends, student surveys, faculty surveys, as well as focus groups and/or interviews.

A dashboard has been created to monitor the initiative, and will be the home for assessment and outcomes data going forward.

Students in RLE courses and in comparison courses will be surveyed at the beginning and end of each RLE course and in non-RLE comparison courses to investigate how the initiative impacts students’ perceptions of belonging, academic self-efficacy, self-efficacy as researchers, and experiential learning. So far, almost 1,300 responses to the pre-survey have been collected.Ìý Surveys of RLE faculty will be administered later in the semester.
