In an article about road salt impacting Maine salamanders, cited a of statewide road salt practices done by researchers at the University of Maine which shows that while the Maine Department of Transportation pre-wets its salt, most municipalities don’t, even though simply wetting the mixture before it’s applied dramatically reduces the amount that winds up in the ditch and impacts wildlife.
