Jean MacRae, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Maine, and Ellen Mallory, professor of sustainable agriculture and Extension specialist at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, were interviewed by the for an article about how 鈥渇orever chemicals鈥 got into Maine鈥檚 soils and food systems. MacRae said that PFOA and PFOS can form from other chemical precursors in settings like wastewater treatment plants. Mallory said the researchers have found that these two compounds are predominant among the PFAS compounds being found in Maine farm soils where sludge was applied.
