Adam Daigneault spoke with the about how harvesting more biomass for wood pellet fuel for heating would affect forest health and management. 鈥淏asically, the state of Maine鈥檚 forests is that the forests are overstocked or overcrowded,鈥 said Daigneault, University of Maine E.L. Giddings Associate Professor of Forest Policy and Economics. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 leaving trees to outcompete each other and the forests aren鈥檛 as healthy or growing as fast as they could. If some of those forests were managed in a way that the biomass is removed or freed up, it would allow opportunities for the trees to grow faster. That would increase the rate of carbon sequestration.鈥
