This knowledge can reveal patterns of environmental change and new ways of living and coping with a changing planet. By bringing Indigenous knowledge and western science together to address contemporary climate change issues, we can foster new strategies for developing effective and holistic responses to the climate crisis.&nbsp; This presentation introduces the new Center for Braiding Indigenous Knowledge and Science (CBIKS), an NSF-funded center aimed at creating ethical pathways to bring holistic thinking to bear on contemporary climate change issues. Dr. Newsom will present an overview of CBIKS goals, values, and objectives and highlight the University of Maine\u2019s role as the Center\u2019s Northeast Hub.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bonnie Newsom<\/strong> (Penobscot) is an Indigenous archaeologist interested in the pre-contact lifeways of Maine\u2019s Native peoples. She is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Maine, and she seeks to humanize past peoples by exploring concepts of identity, social boundaries, and human agency. Dr. Newsom\u2019s professional history includes serving as the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Penobscot Indian Nation and as Assistant Director for 91¸£Àû\u2019s Wabanaki Center. She has a strong public service record which includes serving as Chair of the Repatriation Review Committee for the National Museum of Natural History and as a member of the Maine Indian Tribal-State Commission. Dr. Newsom holds a B.A. in Anthropology and an M.S. in Quaternary Studies from the University of Maine and she earned her Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
