\"WabanakiOn May 4, John Daigle<\/a>, a citizen member of the Penobscot Nation, professor of Forest Resources and Mitchell Center Faculty Fellow, and Ph.D. students Emily Francis and Tyler Everett hosted a workshop for more than 35 staff from the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands.<\/p>\n

The focus of the workshop was the emerald ash borer (EAB), an insect native to Asia that has decimated ash stands in at least 35 states and three Canadian provinces and was recently found in Maine. Brown ash (Fraxinus nigra)<\/em>, the species Wabanaki basket-tree harvesters target, is especially susceptible to the invasive insect.<\/p>\n

Daigle, Francis and Everett shared ongoing research and strategies that may enable Maine\u2019s three native ash species \u2014 white, green and black\/brown \u2014 to co-exist with the emerald ash borer in Maine\u2019s forest landscape.<\/p>\n

Daigle also gave a recent talk<\/a> at the Mitchell Center on his team’s on-going EAB research.<\/p>\n
