Not only could this wasted food help feed those who need it, food waste also contributes to climate change. To mark Earth Day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainepublic.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maine Public<\/a> presented a Maine Calling show, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainepublic.org\/show\/maine-calling\/2022-04-22\/the-harms-of-food-waste-its-links-to-climate-change-and-how-maine-is-taking-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The harms of food waste, its links to climate change, and how Maine is taking action<\/a>.\u201d The show focused on what Maine people and organizations are doing to end food waste through community action and innovative solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Representing the University of Maine\u2019s food waste solutions team on the show were <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mitchellcenter\/people\/susanne-lee\/\">Susanne Lee<\/a>, a faculty fellow at the Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions, <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mitchellcenter\/people\/travis-blackmer\/\">Travis Blackmer<\/a>, lecturer and undergraduate coordinator with the School of Economics, and Ivan Fernandez, Distinguished Maine Professor at the Climate Change Institute and School of Forest Resources. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainepublic.org\/show\/maine-calling\/2022-04-22\/the-harms-of-food-waste-its-links-to-climate-change-and-how-maine-is-taking-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A recording of the show is available online<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Of the food produced in the United State, 40 percent is wasted.
