Kopec is a Mitchell Center faculty fellow with expertise in aquatic ecosystems and mercury contamination.<\/p>\n<p>Fish from Pushaw Lake have not been tested for mercury since 2011, when results showed that 90% had mercury levels above the state\u2019s 200 parts per billion action level. Maine is one of 27 states nationwide that have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maine.gov\/ifw\/fishing-boating\/fishing\/laws-rules\/consumption-advisory.html#:~:text=Mercury%20in%20Maine%20freshwater%20fish,fish%20from%20Maine's%20inland%20waters.\">freshwater fish consumption advisories<\/a> in place due to concerns about mercury\u2019s health effects, particularly on pregnant women and younger children.<\/p>\n<p>Kopec sampled about 60 fish caught during the derby, with anglers\u2019 permission, and hopes that testing will help to establish current levels of mercury in the lake\u2019s fish.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dianne Kopec was interviewed for a Feb. 5 Bangor Daily News story and a Feb. 6 segment on NewsCenter Maine about testing for mercury in fish caught during the Pushaw Lake Ice Fishing Derby.
