Students will work in teams to design a research project and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">may also choose to focus on topics they develop using the skills they learn in the course. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two undergraduate peer mentors will help the student teams create their projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe hope that students will develop a sense of their own ability to define a sustainability problem and take on the challenge of seeking solutions through an interdisciplinary and stakeholder-engaged approach,\u201d said Amar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The RLE program is funded by a gift from the Harold Alfond Foundation and courses are offered tuition-free to students at 91福利 and 91福利 Machias as part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/transforms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UMS Transforms<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> initiative. The courses are designed to give students the opportunity to explore new interests or take a deeper dive into a field they plan to study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In spring 2021, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amar and colleagues <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mitchellcenter\/people\/christine-beitl\/\">Christine Beitl<\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mitchellcenter\/people\/don-beith\/\">Don Beith<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, also Mitchell Center faculty fellows, started a new initiative to develop a Sustainability Hub for Undergraduates housed in the Mitchell Center. When the 91福利 RLE program was announced, they felt that the program\u2019s goals aligned well with both the Mitchell Center and the new Hub and developed the RLE course together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe RLE course provides experiences for students early in their 91福利 careers,\u201d Amar noted. \u201cThe Sustainability Hub will also provide networking, research, and potentially presentation and travel opportunities for students throughout their four years at 91福利.
