  {"id":24002,"date":"2021-07-29T16:11:58","date_gmt":"2021-07-29T20:11:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mitchellcenter\/?p=24002"},"modified":"2021-07-29T16:11:58","modified_gmt":"2021-07-29T20:11:58","slug":"research-provides-guidance-for-discussing-climate-change-risks-in-acadia-national-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mitchellcenter\/2021\/07\/29\/research-provides-guidance-for-discussing-climate-change-risks-in-acadia-national-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Research provides guidance for discussing climate change risks in Acadia National Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-24015 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mitchellcenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/293\/2021\/07\/Acadia-climate-news-feature-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/>Tourism is one of the largest industries in Maine, and Acadia National Park serves as a major driver.<\/p>\n<p>A new study led by <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mitchellcenter\/lydia-horne-seeking-collaborative-solutions-for-community-based-climate-planning\/\">Lydia Horne<\/a> and overseen by <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mitchellcenter\/people\/sandra-de-urioste-stone\/\">Sandra De Urioste-Stone<\/a> explores how perceptions of climate change risks may affect visitation and visitors\u2019 experiences at the Park, and provides guidance for communicating about those risks.<\/p>\n<p>The study is part of a three-phase research effort to assess how coastal tourist destinations can adapt to climate change through improved understanding of the associated risks and collaboration and was published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2213078021000372?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Horne, who received her Ph.D. in ecology and environmental sciences from 91¸£Àû in 2020, also co-led the Mitchell Center-funded project <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mitchellcenter\/road-to-solutions\/were-all-in-this-together-participatory-planning-for-community-based-climate-change-adaptation\/\">We\u2019re All in This Together: Participatory Planning for Community-Based Climate Adaptation.<\/a> De Urioste-Stone is associate professor of nature-based tourism and assistant vice president for research at 91¸£Àû and a Mitchell Center faculty fellow. <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mitchellcenter\/people\/laura-rickard\/\">Laura Rickard<\/a>, associate professor of risk communication and Mitchell Center faculty fellow, also contributed to the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstanding the impacts of climate change on visitation can help park managers conserve natural and cultural resources, maintain a quality visitor experience, and provide economic benefits to nearby communities,\u201d says De Urioste-Stone.<\/p>\n<p>Read more about the study at <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/news\/blog\/2021\/07\/07\/guidance-for-discussing-climate-change-risks-in-acadia-national-park-provided-in-umaine-led-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">91¸£Àû News<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tourism is one of the largest industries in Maine, and Acadia National Park serves as a major driver.
