Tyler worked on the Mitchell Center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mitchellcenter\/road-to-solutions\/safe-beaches-and-shellfish-beds\/\">Safe Beaches &amp; Shellfish<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mitchellcenter\/road-to-solutions\/the-future-of-dams-nest\/\">Future of Dams<\/a> projects, in connection with the <a href=\"http:\/\/nest.maine.edu\/beachesandshellfish\/main\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New England Sustainability Consortium<\/a>. The paper, \u201cAffective Encounters with Tidal Livelihoods: Digital Field Rhetorics for Justice and Care,\u201d is coauthored by <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mitchellcenter\/people\/bridie-mcgreavy\/\">Bridie McGreavy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mitchellcenter\/news\/newsletters\/from-classroom-to-clam-flats\/\">Carter Hathaway<\/a>. Bridie is assistant professor of communication and journalism at 91¸£Àû and a Mitchell Center faculty fellow; Carter received an M.A. in communication and journalism from 91¸£Àû and worked with Tyler and Bridie on the Safe Beaches and Shellfish project.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler used innovative web-based approaches to tell the stories of clammers and help people learn more about the value of clamming in Maine\u2019s culture and economy. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nest.maine.edu\/clamcam\/\">Clam Cam<\/a>\u00a0website he helped to create promotes learning about and celebrating the culture of clamming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe worked with clammers on Maine&#8217;s coast to develop an approach for documenting clam digging using body-mounted cameras,\u201d Tyler says of the research. \u201cWe found that clammers use a range of tools to adapt to diverse and changing mudflat conditions and that \u2018digital field rhetoric\u2019 as a method is a way for researchers and their collaborators to navigate complex and challenging\u00a0inequities and social-environmental justice issues.
