Darren Ranco<\/a> will discuss climate change impacts and adaptation priorities among Wabanaki First Nations in Maine on Thursday, May 16, at 4:10 p.m. at College of the Atlantic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The lecture, part of the Seminar in Climate Change 2019 Speaker Series, will be held in McCormick Lecture Hall.<\/p>\n

Darren Ranco<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cIndigenous people will be impacted by climatic change in significant ways. In this talk, Ranco examines current and future climate change impacts to the Wabanaki Confederacy and their climate adaptation priorities,\u201d said event organizers.<\/p>\n

Ranco, a citizen of the Penobscot Nation, is an associate professor of anthropology and Chair of Native American Programs at the University of Maine. He has a master\u2019s degree in environmental law from Vermont Law School and a Ph.D. in social anthropology from Harvard University.<\/p>\n

His research focuses on the ways in which indigenous communities in the United States resist environmental destruction by using indigenous science, diplomacy, and critiques of liberalism to protect natural and cultural resources. He teaches classes on indigenous intellectual property rights, research ethics, environmental justice and tribal governance.<\/p>\n
