91 News: Lukens speaks with BDN about Penobscot language book of folktales
Margo Lukens, professor of English at 91, talked with the about the recently published book, Lukens co-authored the book with Carol Dana, Penobscot language master, and Conor Quinn, linguistics faculty at the University of Southern Maine, as a teaching tool for Penobscot citizens seeking to relearn their language and to preserve Penobscot culture and identity.
Margo gave a talk on the development of the book, and how traditional stories can help to create a more sustainable future, as part of the Mitchell Center’s Sustainability Talks series in April 2021. View a of this talk on our Vimeo page.
“The teaching of the stories connects to how you make your life in a place,” Margo noted in her talk. “Very often, [these] stories are about restoring balance.”
