{"id":8003,"date":"2025-04-15T14:02:03","date_gmt":"2025-04-15T18:02:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mhc\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=8003"},"modified":"2025-04-15T14:02:03","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T18:02:03","slug":"symposium-event-mary-and-molly-film-screening","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mhc\/event\/symposium-event-mary-and-molly-film-screening\/","title":{"rendered":"Symposium event: Mary and Molly (film screening)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The McGillicuddy Humanities Center will present a screening of\u00a0<strong><span class=\"il\">Mary<\/span> and <span class=\"il\">Molly<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>accompanied by a discussion with\u00a0<strong>Donna Loring<\/strong>\u00a0(Co-Director),\u00a0<strong>David Camlin <\/strong>(Co-Director &amp; Editor\/Animator),\u00a0<strong>Margo Lukens <\/strong>(Casting &amp; Dialog Director), and <strong>Elizabeth Sockbeson<\/strong> (Penobscot Nation elder).<\/p>\n<div><em><strong><span class=\"il\">Mary<\/span> and <span class=\"il\">Molly<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>follows <span class=\"il\">Mary<\/span>, a young African-American woman living in Bangor, Maine. She finds a letter from her mother that tells of her Penobscot Indian heritage and the decision that her parents made many years ago to bring her up with only the knowledge of her African-American heritage. After opening the letter on her 21st Birthday, <span class=\"il\">Mary<\/span> goes to the Bangor Public Library and learns of <span class=\"il\">Molly<\/span> Molasses, her Penobscot Ancestor, and connects with her Penobscot ancestry for the first time. The film tackles Black and Brown issues of race, heritage, and the choosing of identity. The film features the creative work of indigenous creators and collaborators.
