{"id":7707,"date":"2023-09-13T10:48:19","date_gmt":"2023-09-13T14:48:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mhc\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=7707"},"modified":"2023-09-13T10:48:54","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T14:48:54","slug":"pre-performance-lecture-the-best-of-enemies","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mhc\/event\/pre-performance-lecture-the-best-of-enemies\/","title":{"rendered":"Pre-Performance Lecture: &#8220;The Best of Enemies&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On November 3 at 6:00 pm in the Bodwell Lounge of the Collins Center for the Arts, former MHC director and professor of communication and journalism <strong>Michael Socolow<\/strong> will give a pre-show lecture before the National Theatre stream of &#8220;The Best of Enemies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The talk will cover the ways in which television news evolved in the years that frame \u201cBest of Enemies.\u201d\u00a0 The play dramatizes the famous televised confrontation between William F. Buckley and Gore Vidal that occurred at the 1968 Democratic convention and was aired live by ABC News.\u00a0 Socolow will describe how the moment crystallized numerous social, cultural and political themes erupting in the 1960s on television sets throughout the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Presented with the support of the Clement and Linda McGillicuddy Humanities Center, the talk and reception\u00a0will take place in the Bodwell Lounge on the 3rd floor of the CCA. It\u00a0is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>91¸£Àû &#8220;The Best of Enemies&#8221;: David Harewood (<em>Homeland<\/em>) and Zachary Quinto (<em>Star Trek<\/em>) play feuding political rivals in James Graham\u2019s (<em>Sherwood<\/em>) multiple award-winning new drama. In 1968 America, as two men fight to become the next president, all eyes are on the battle between two others: the cunningly conservative William F. Buckley Jr., and the unruly liberal Gore Vidal. During a new nightly television format, they debate the moral landscape of a shattered nation. As beliefs are challenged and slurs slung, a new frontier in American politics is opening and television news is about to be transformed forever.
