{"id":5532,"date":"2019-09-15T11:10:15","date_gmt":"2019-09-15T15:10:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mhc\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;eventDate=2019-11-18#038;p=5461"},"modified":"2019-11-18T12:36:41","modified_gmt":"2019-11-18T17:36:41","slug":"mcgillicuddy-humanities-center-film-series-the-cinema-of-colonization-and-decolonization-2019-11-18","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mhc\/event\/mcgillicuddy-humanities-center-film-series-the-cinema-of-colonization-and-decolonization-2019-11-18\/","title":{"rendered":"McGillicuddy Humanities Center Film Series : Before Tomorrow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Greg Quill&#8217;s review of <em>Before Tomorrow<\/em> from <em>The Star<\/em>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A disturbing and powerful metaphor for the doom visited on the Inuit after their insulated world was penetrated by Europeans in the mid-1800s, <em>Before Tomorrow<\/em>, co-directed by native filmmakers and writers Marie-H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Cousineau and Madeline Ivalu, imagines a moment in which these once hardy people, ill-equipped to survive in the new order, face the awful inevitability of extinction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The McGillicuddy Humanities Center Film Series will feature a collection of six films throughout the academic year related to &#8220;The Cinema of Colonization and Decolonization.&#8221; The global films in the series, from France, Africa, Canada, Argentina and the United States, feature a variety of filming styles, including documentary, ethnographic, and outsider films alongside studio productions. The film selections examine colonialism, racism and post-colonial identity, as well as decolonization of the film industry itself.<\/p>\n<p>All films will be shown in the Hill Auditorium in Barrows Hall at 6PM on the following Mondays. Spring films and dates announced soon:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>October 21 &#8211; <em>Zama <\/em>(2017), dir. Lucrecia Martel, 115 minute runtime<\/li>\n<li>November 4 &#8211; <em>Carol<\/em> (2015), dir. Todd Haynes, 118 minute runtime<\/li>\n<li>November 25 (rescheduled from November 18) &#8211; <em>Before Tomorrow<\/em> (2008),\u00a0dir.
