The Age of Left-Wing Melancholia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The talk is part of\u00a0a yearlong talk series \u201cLife of Ideas, Notions, and Concepts\u201d curated by MHC faculty board member Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Rondeau which included\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mhc\/event\/life-ideas-notions-concepts-justin-wolff-steve-evans\/\">fall<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mhc\/event\/life-ideas-notions-concepts-michael-lang-anne-knowles-michael-howard\/\">spring\u00a0panels<\/a>\u00a0of 91¸£Àû faculty, as well as upcoming guest speaker\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mhc\/event\/life-ideas-notions-concepts-guest-eric-mechoulan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00c9ric M\u00e9choulan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Enzo Traverso was born in Italy, studied history at the University of Genoa and received his PhD from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) of Paris in 1989. He has taught political science in France and been visiting professor in several European and Latin American countries. In 2013 he became the Susan and Barton Winokur Professor in the Humanities at Cornell University. His publications, translated into a dozen languages, include\u00a0<em>The Jews and Germany<\/em>\u00a0(1995),\u00a0<em>The Origins of Nazi Violence<\/em>\u00a0(2003),\u00a0<em>Fire and Blood:\u00a0The European Civil War <\/em>1914-1945\u00a0(2015),\u00a0<em>The End of Jewish Modernity<\/em>\u00a0(2016).<\/p>\n<p>Traverso will talk about his latest book: <em>Left-Wing Melancholia: Marxism, History, and Memory <\/em>(New York: Columbia UP, 2017)<\/p>\n<p>From the back jacket\u00a0:<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the twentieth century, argues\u00a0<em>Left-Wing Melancholia<\/em>, from classical Marxism to psychoanalysis to the advent of critical theory, a culture of defeat and its emotional overlay of melancholy have characterized the leftist understanding of the political in history and in theoretical critique.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on a vast and diverse archive in theory, testimony, and image and on such thinkers as Karl Marx, Walter Benjamin, Theodor W. Adorno, and others . . . Traverso explores the varying nature of left melancholy as it has manifested in a feeling of guilt for not sufficiently challenging authority, in a fear of surrendering in disarray and resignation, in mourning the human costs of the past, and in a sense of failure for not realizing utopian aspirations. Yet hidden within this melancholic tradition are the resources for a renewed challenge to prevailing regimes of historicity, a passion that has the power to reignite the dialectic of revolutionary thought.<\/p>\n<p>Enzo Traverso\u2019s\u00a0March 29\u00a0talk will take place at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mhc\/venue\/allen-and-sally-fernald-appe-space\/\">Allen and Sally Fernald APPE space<\/a>,\u00a0Stewart Commons IMRC.
