This project is &#8220;devoted to developing and sharing philosophical ideas that are applied specifically to the state of Maine.&#8221; Arel, who previously directed a public philosophy program at Northern Arizona University, is the founder and General Editor of <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=f5e0b9804f18bb5508f23da3f&amp;id=47908f7f67&amp;e=e3aa1ee992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/umaine.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Df5e0b9804f18bb5508f23da3f%26id%3D47908f7f67%26e%3De3aa1ee992&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1651859634932000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3Pkr2YxzcgLJfJKij8le1R\">localphilosophy.org<\/a>, a nonprofit public philosophy organization that focuses on engaging philosophers and philosophical thinking within particular\u00a0communities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Margaret (Mimi) Killinger (Honors, Rezendes Preceptor for the Arts)<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u201cJoanna Paul: The Otago Years, 1977-1983\u201d<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Margaret Killinger, associate professor of Honors and Rezendes Preceptor for the Arts, will apply her McGillicuddy Humanities Center <span class=\"il\">Faculty<\/span>\u00a0award towards travel and research for her \u201cJoanna Paul: The Otago Years, 1977-1983\u201d project. Killinger&#8217;s immediate research will focus on the years\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=f5e0b9804f18bb5508f23da3f&amp;id=af22986665&amp;e=e3aa1ee992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/umaine.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Df5e0b9804f18bb5508f23da3f%26id%3Daf22986665%26e%3De3aa1ee992&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1651859634932000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2Zb4sdpPbmmBUwv1TgWTl8\">Joanna Margaret Paul (1945-2003)<\/a> spent as artist and poet in Dunedin, New Zealand, from 1977 to 1983. Paul is remembered in New Zealand as &#8220;one of our most original (and most unsung) poets, a painter who\u2019d never really received her due, an artist in the fullest sense of the term,&#8221; and Killinger&#8217;s work\u00a0will investigate Paul\u2019s coming of age as a public artist and an intriguing figure within the New Zealand women\u2019s art movement.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Brian Pitman (Sociology)<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;Addressing Homelessness and Building Community in the Greater Bangor Area&#8221;<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Brian Pitman, assistant professor of sociology, was awarded a <span class=\"il\">grant<\/span>\u00a0for his &#8220;<strong>Addressing Homelessness and Building Community in the Greater Bangor Area<\/strong>&#8221; project. The <span class=\"il\">grant<\/span> will be used to &#8220;initiate community conversations &#8211; both inside and outside the classroom and university, based on shared reading experiences \u2014 that raise awareness amongst different stakeholders in the Greater Bangor area about how to care for each other during this worsening housing crisis. The new work is based on the life of<a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=f5e0b9804f18bb5508f23da3f&amp;id=24f97afc87&amp;e=e3aa1ee992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/umaine.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Df5e0b9804f18bb5508f23da3f%26id%3D24f97afc87%26e%3De3aa1ee992&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1651859634932000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2xmTDpyXbIyMh60mmdzdgi\">\u00a0Rose Standish Nichols<\/a>, a suffragette and WWI-era Peace activist, with a libretto by Wiemann based on materials in the Museum collection and its publications.
