Qualities of rural culture that helped build our nation are vanishing, but are still evident in places like northern Maine. There is value in remembering our roots as a source of permanence and direction in the midst of change.
Kathryn Olmstead served 25 years on the journalism faculty of the University of Maine in Orono, the last six as associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She published Echoes magazine, a quarterly journal of rural culture based in Caribou, Maine, from 1988 to 2017, and wrote a biweekly column for the Bangor Daily News. She will present 鈥淩ediscovering Community: Maine鈥檚 Rural Heritage as a Path to the Future鈥 on聽Friday, Oct. 26.
The event begins with the Dean’s Reception聽at 4:00 p.m. in the Hudson Museum. The lecture will follow at 5 p.m. in the Bodwell Lounge.
