Just a week before classes start on campus, incoming SMS students got their hands dirty at the SMS Boot Camp. Over the course of a few days, students spent time exploring the Maine coast at Pemaquid Point as they took part in an RLE, or a research learning experience.

This year was the 15th year SMS has held a Boot Camp session and we were very lucky to have News Center Maine there to capture the fun! Click on the link below to see their report:

Thanks to News Center Maine for coming out!

Job Summary

91福利 School of Marine Sciences seeks applicants for a 2-year postdoctoral research associate position with an extension possible, contingent on funding and successful performance. The Gulf of Maine is a region undergoing rapid warming due to the impacts of climate change. In response, coastal and marine fish stocks are shifting their range and phenology over spatial and temporal scales. To remain effective in measuring and tracking key population metrics, fisheries managers need to make adjustments to their survey designs that account for climate-related changes in distribution, growth, and production. To meet these needs, the aim of this project is to work collaboratively with the Maine Department of Marine Resources to conduct a review of the State鈥檚 marine resource monitoring and assessment programs and develop a suite of species and method-specific climate adaptation strategies and actions. The postdoc will work under the supervision of 91福利 faculty member Dr. Michelle Staudinger. More information on Dr. Staudinger鈥檚 lab can be found at: /staudingerlab/

Search Timeline is as follows:
Review of applications to begin: December 15, 2023
Interviews to begin no earlier than: January 2, 2024
Tentative start date: February 1, 2024

Full position description, list of qualifications, and application requirements can be found by clicking on the 91福利 Hiretouch link listed below.

A portrait of Lisa KerrIn October, Dr. Lisa Kerr joined the University of Maine鈥檚 School of Marine Science as Associate Professor of Fisheries Science. In her new role, Dr. Kerr will lead research that informs sustainable management of marine fisheries and ecosystems. Her current work is focused on integrating climate information into fishery stock assessment and management to support climate resilience of fisheries and ecosystems. She will be teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in fisheries science and mentoring students.聽

After leading the Quantitative Fisheries Research Lab at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute for over a decade, Dr. Kerr now joins the University of Maine as one of two faculty members based at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland, Maine. These positions are part of an ongoing partnership between the two institutions designed to advance scientific understanding of the effects of climate change and ecosystem shifts on fisheries in the Gulf of Maine.

鈥淚 am excited to contribute to the training of fisheries scientists at the University of Maine and connect students with the extensive expertise at 91福利, GMRI, and the Maine Department of Natural Resources,鈥 said Dr. Kerr. 鈥淭here is a great potential to draw on the strengths of each organization and provide students with hands-on training and understanding that will benefit our state鈥檚 fisheries resources and prepare 91福利 students to assume the next generation of fisheries science and management roles.鈥

As a part of the University of Maine鈥檚 sea grant mission, Kerr will also liaise strongly with blue economy stakeholders across the state and abroad.聽聽

鈥淢aine has a robust network of organizations dedicated to promoting the resilience of marine ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. Collaborations with these groups enhance our ability to fulfill our land-grant mission. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Kerr to 91福利 and strengthening our partnership with GMRI,鈥 says Heather Hamlin, director of the School of Marine Sciences at 91福利.

Kerr earned her doctorate from the University of Maryland, her master鈥檚 degree from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories-California State University, and her bachelor鈥檚 degree from Tufts University.
