  {"id":21398,"date":"2022-05-11T11:36:08","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T15:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/edhd\/?p=21398"},"modified":"2022-05-11T11:36:08","modified_gmt":"2022-05-11T15:36:08","slug":"sezen-barrie-participates-in-2022-stem-for-all-video-showcase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/edhd\/2022\/05\/11\/sezen-barrie-participates-in-2022-stem-for-all-video-showcase\/","title":{"rendered":"Sezen-Barrie participates in 2022 STEM for All Video Showcase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Asli Sezen-Barrie, associate professor of curriculum, assessment and instruction in the University of Maine College of Education and Human Development, is participating in the 2022 STEM for All Video Showcase virtual event, May 10\u201317.<\/p>\n<p>Sezen-Barrie is former co-principal investigator of a National Science Foundation-funded project with colleagues from the Education Development Center (EDC) in Waltham, Massachusetts; Mount Washington Observatory (MWO) in North Conway, New Hampshire; and the University of Washington, titled \u201cWeatherX: Building Data Literacy Among Rural Youth.\u201d She had to step down as co-PI last year, when she accepted a two-year position as <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/edhd\/2021\/08\/30\/sezen-barrie-named-nsf-program-director\/\">program director<\/a> of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division for Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings. She still designs and leads research efforts during her approved independent research time.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/edhd\/2019\/08\/15\/umaine-partners-with-edc-mount-washington-observatory-and-others-on-nsf-funded-project-to-promote-data-science-education\/\">WeatherX project<\/a> works with middle school science teachers in New Hampshire and Maine to promote interest in data science careers among students from low-income rural communities. The research team developed and has been testing two, three-week prototype curriculum units in which students investigate local weather patterns using large-scale data collected from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and extreme storm data from MWO, a site that has been called the \u201cHome of the World\u2019s Worst Weather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur project team has designed equitable and locally relevant units to engage middle school students in analyzing data on extreme weather, one of the grand challenges of our time,\u201d says Sezen-Barrie, who participated in the STEM for All Video Showcase <a href=\"https:\/\/multiplex.videohall.com\/presentations\/1030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in 2017<\/a>. \u201cStudents have opportunities to work with the scientists at the summit of Mount Washington and community members in their local neighborhoods. We are participating in the STEM for All Video Showcase because it gives us [the] opportunity to share our work with [a] wider audience and connect with similar projects nationwide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The WeatherX team\u2019s showcase presentation can be viewed on the STEM for All <a href=\"https:\/\/stemforall2022.videohall.com\/presentations\/2359\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its eighth year, the annual showcase will feature over 250 projects aimed at improving science, technology, math, engineering and computer science education that have been funded by NSF and other federal agencies. During the eight-day event, researchers, practitioners, policy makers and members of the public are invited to view short videos, discuss them with the presenters online and vote for their favorites.<\/p>\n<p>The theme for this year\u2019s event is \u201cAccess, Inclusion, and Equity.\u201d The presentations cover a broad range of topics including science, mathematics, computer science, engineering, cyberlearning, citizen science, maker spaces, broadening participation, research experiences, mentoring, professional development, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the Common Core.<\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/stemforall2021.videohall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STEM for All Video Showcase<\/a> is still being accessed, and to date has had over 103,000 unique visitors from 178 countries.<\/p>\n<p>The showcase is hosted by the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TERC<\/a>, in partnership with: <a href=\"http:\/\/stemtlnet.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STEMTLnet<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/cadrek12.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> CADRE<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/informalscience.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CAISE<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/circls.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CIRCLS<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/stelar.edc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STELAR<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/csforallteachers.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CS for All Teachers<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/narst.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NARST<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nctm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NCTM<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsta.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NSTA<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.includesnetwork.org\/about-us\/how-we-do-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NSF INCLUDES<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qem.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">QEM<\/a>.
