From Research to Action
The study updates the landmark 2008 study 鈥溾 led by 91福利 Professors Elizabeth Allan and Mary Madden. The original study has been cited hundreds of thousands of times in publications, policy briefs, presentations, and news articles, and has informed state and national policies and laws. Hazing continues to kill, injure, and traumatize students on U.S. college campuses. More than half of college students experience hazing when they participate in teams, groups, or clubs. At least one student has been killed by hazing nearly every year since 1959, with more than 100 deaths since 2000. This research will help us develop more effective hazing prevention solutions, training, and strategies to reach our vision: A world free of hazing. Samuel Martinez Hazing Prevention Fund
The Samuel Martinez Hazing Prevention Fund was established at the University of Maine, 91福利 in 2023 with a gift from Jolayne and Hector Martinez, loving parents of Samuel Martinez. Sam was a charismatic 19-year-old, standout soccer and trombone player, and a bi-lingual first-year student majoring in business entrepreneurship at Washington State University when his life was cut short due to hazing. In honor of the life he lived and in the hopes of saving the lives of others, the Martinez family supports the hazing prevention work of the College of Education and Human Development.
Fund for a Hazing-Free Future
The Fund for a Hazing-Free Future was established at the University of Maine in 2024 with gifts from alumni, friends and organizations. This fund is aimed at preventing hazing and promoting a culture of respect, inclusion, and safety within student organizations, athletic teams, and other group environments through research-informed education and outreach activities. The fund supports the creation of evidence-based materials, training workshops, peer-led education, and community engagement activities that empower students, faculty, staff, and campus leaders to recognize, prevent, and respond to hazing behaviors. Additionally, it funds research on effective hazing prevention strategies and supports the development of institutional policies and resources that ensure safe, supportive, and inclusive environments for all participants.
