91�� alumna among Maine Teacher of the Year finalists

Edith Berger, the 2023 Lincoln County Teacher of the Year and a two-time University of Maine alumna, and Colleen Maker, 2023 Washington County Teacher of the Year and University of Maine at Machias alumna, have been named finalists for 2024 Maine Teacher of the Year.

Two conferences in May will celebrate literacy across the lifespan

91�� College of Education and Human Development will host a pair of conferences this month that highlight the many ways its Literacy, Language and Culture programs support schools and communities throughout the state.

Literacy nights highlight 91��’s service to schools and families

The College of Education and Human Development has incorporated literacy nights at area schools into the curriculum for education majors for more than 20 years. It’s an opportunity for 91�� students taking their literacy methods courses to apply some of the knowledge and skills they have picked up in the classroom and to gain hands-on experience working with K–12 students and families.

Ming-Tso Chien is the 2023 recipient of the Outstanding Graduate Student in Literacy, Language and Culture Award.

COEHD alumna Kelsey Stoyanova to keynote 91�� Student Symposium

University of Maine College of Education and Human Development alumna and 2022 Maine Teacher of the Year Kelsey Stoyanova will give the keynote talk at the annual 91�� Student Symposium (UMSS), a celebration of student research and creative work, April 14 at the Collins Center for the Arts.

Media report on 91�� alum’s Milken Educator Award

Sarah Collins (’08, ’14G), a fourth-grade science teacher at Patricia A. Duran School in Hermon, will get a $25,000 unrestricted cash prize from the Milken Family Foundation, which hands out the awards — sometimes called the Oscars of Teaching — to educators who inspire and uplift, and make a profound difference for students, colleagues and communities.

ISLS honors Reagan with lifetime achievement award

Timothy Reagan, University of Maine professor of foreign language education and former dean of the College of Education and Human Development, has received a Distinguished Scholar and Lifetime Achievement in Language Studies award from the International Society of Language Studies.
