Allan discusses anti-hazing bills with The Chronicle of Higher Education

Professor of higher education Elizabeth Allan was quoted in a recent story in about the failure of an anti-hazing bill in Virginia prompted by the death of student in a fraternity house. The article explores why some state lawmakers pass anti-hazing legislation following the death or serious injury of a student, while others do not. 鈥淚t is often the case that we don鈥檛 come up with a response until there鈥檚 been a very, very serious issue or harm that鈥檚 resulted,鈥 Allan said. 鈥淎nd that鈥檚 not unique to hazing.鈥 She added that while laws are part of an overall prevention strategy, they are not enough on their own to stop hazing. 鈥淚t needs to be more widely understood why hazing is a problem, how it causes harm, how it undercuts the good things that we鈥檙e working toward for students,鈥 she said.
