Anyone, a parent, guardian, fellow student, staff or faculty member, or other concerned individual can follow the steps below and refer a student for follow up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Recognize<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are indicators that will help you identify a student of concern for review by the SBRT.&nbsp; Pay attention to persistent behaviors, sudden changes, and the duration of the signs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Academic<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sudden decline in quality of course work and\/or grades<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of organizational skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multiple requests for extensions on assignments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overly demanding of faculty\/staff&#8217;s time and attention, both in and via email<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unusual content in writings and presentations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conversations tending towards personal topics rather than the students coursework<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Physical<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Significant changes in physical appearance (grooming\/hygiene, weight loss\/gain)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excessive loss of sleep or fatigue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consistent intoxication, hangovers, or the scent of alcohol<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seems to be disoriented or &#8220;out of it&#8221; often<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disconnected or slurred speech<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strange behavior that is out of context<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Delusions or paranoia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Psychological<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Concern from peers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extreme emotional response to events<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excessive crying or panicked reactions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unusual irritability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heightened apathy towards things they normally cherish or look forward to<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>disclosure of personal issues (family or financial issues, grief, suicide ideation, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Safety Risk<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Physical violence towards others (shoving, grabbing, assault, use of weapons)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Implying or making a direct threat to harm themselves or others<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Themes of hopelessness, rage, worthlessness, despair, suicidal ideation, etc. found within academic assignments or during conversations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stalking or harassing of others<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communicating threats of, or to, others or self<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Respond<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stay Safe: <\/strong>Assess the situation and call 911 or UMPD at 207.581.4040 if there is an imminent danger to the student, you, or another individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stay Calm:&nbsp;<\/strong>Take a few deep breaths to calm yourself.&nbsp; Use a calm voice when talking to a student in crisis and asking questions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Utilize Active Listening:<\/strong> Make eye contact (if appropriate) and give your full attention to the student.&nbsp; Restate and reiterate what the student says to make sure you understand the cause of the distress and\/or what they are asking you for help with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ask Direct Question:&nbsp;<\/strong>Don&#8217;t be afraid to directly ask the student if they are having thoughts of harming themselves or others (asking this will not instill the thought into the student).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use&nbsp;<strong>OARS<\/strong> when talking to a student in distress:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>O<\/strong>pen-Ended Questions &#8211; ask questions that require a full answer and are not yes\/no<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A<\/strong>ffirmations &#8211; acknowledge the student&#8217;s distress without judgement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>R<\/strong>eflective Listening &#8211; understand what an individual says and feels and then relay this back to them in the conversation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>S<\/strong>ummarize &#8211; validate the student during the conversation and encourage them to seek resources on campus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Refer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Is immediate assistance necessary?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Yes<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Behavior that is severely disruptive, directly impacts others, and is actively dangerous including life-threatening or self-injurious behaviors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Call 911 or UMPD at 207.581.4040 for immediate response<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submit a <a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?UnivofMaineSystem&amp;layout_id=11\">SBRT report<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Unsure<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Behavior is at an elevated level and is increasingly disruptive or the behavior is causing impairment in the student to manage themselves, their emotions, and\/or their actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Submit a <a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?UnivofMaineSystem&amp;layout_id=11\">SBRT report<\/a> and\/or call Student Life at 207.581.1406 for guidance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>No<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Many students experience stress in college.&nbsp; Some may need more support when one or more stressors are present, they have a lack of coping skills, or the student has a limited or non-existent support network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you feel the student needs more support, submit a <a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?UnivofMaineSystem&amp;layout_id=11\">SBRT report<\/a> and refer the student to appropriate campus resources.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Concerning Behaviors What should I do?
