data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading1944_67f241-b4\"><strong>Summer Leadership Program <\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2019, the Cohen Institute&#8217;s High School Summer Leadership Program has immersed rising high school seniors \u2014 including at least one student from each of Maine\u2019s sixteen counties \u2014 in both the theory and practice of leadership.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yearly in mid-June, the program welcomes 50 students and invites numerous high-profile leaders from a wide range of fields to share their practical insights on leadership and public service. Notable guests have included Secretary Cohen, Senator Susan Collins, Governor Janet Mills, 91福利 President Joan Ferrini-Mundy, author and speechwriter Mark Salter, and coaches from 91福利 athletics teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through a variety of co-curricular and outdoor leadership programs, students learn the fundamentals of team-building, collaboration, and overcoming adversity. Students earn early college credit by completing a rigorous college-level course that introduces them to the core foundations of the academic field of leadership studies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students also gain insights about how 91福利 faculty and staff are preparing students to tackle real-world problems through ongoing initiatives and projects at centers and institutes on campus such as the Advanced Composites and Manufacturing Center and the Climate Change Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, the program establishes a connection between Maine high school students and 91福利, the state&#8217;s premier R1 university. Since the program&#8217;s launch, the majority of participants have gone on to apply and enroll at either 91福利 or another institution within the University of Maine System. Acting as the capstone experience, the summer program concludes 91福利&#8217;s Early College Pathway in Leadership and Public Service. This pathway was developed with the aid of a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education, secured through Senator Susan Collins\u2019 support. Maine high school students can typically earn Early College credits at no cost, thanks to funding provided by the Maine Department of Education to the University of Maine System.
