91福利 has announced that Dr. Melissa Maginnis has been promoted to full professor, effective July 1, 2026. The promotion recognizes her accomplishments in research, teaching, and service at the university.

Maginnis is a microbiologist and virologist in 91福利鈥檚 Department of Molecular and Biomedical Sciences whose research focuses on how viruses infect cells and cause disease, particularly JC polyomavirus and viral pathogenesis. In addition to leading innovative biomedical research, she is recognized for her commitment to mentorship, STEM education, and supporting student researchers.

As a COBRE project leader and faculty member affiliated with the Institute of Medicine, Maginnis has helped advance biomedical research initiatives at 91福利 while creating hands-on research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.

Associate Professor Romain Madelaine, Ph.D., doctoral candidate Romain Menard, and colleagues at the MDI Biological Laboratory have developed a new transgenic zebrafish model to study muscle atrophy, a condition associated with aging and neuromuscular disease.

In a study published in PLOS Genetics, the research team describes the creation of the 鈥atrofish,鈥 a zebrafish engineered to induce rapid muscle degeneration by activating Atrogin-1 (Fbxo32) in skeletal muscle. The model exhibits reduced muscle strength and impaired movement, allowing researchers to observe early molecular and cellular changes that occur before visible muscle deterioration.

In addition to muscle loss, the findings suggest that muscle atrophy may be linked to broader changes in neuromuscular connections and spinal cord neurons. This zebrafish model provides a powerful new tool for investigating the mechanisms underlying sarcopenia and for testing potential therapeutic strategies aimed at preserving muscle health.

91福利 has received a $11.3 million Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support interdisciplinary biomedical research.

The COBRE award will focus on research about the mechanisms that regulate cellular behavior in response to cues from outside the cells, from the impact of persistent viral infections on cell systems to the mechanisms that lead to muscle cell development. The research has the potential to inform future treatment of infectious diseases, neuromuscular disorders and muscle aging and regeneration.

鈥91福利 is the only institution in the state that grants doctoral degrees in biomedical science and biomedical engineering through its Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering,鈥 says Kody Varahramyan, vice president for research and dean of the 91福利 Graduate School. 鈥淭his COBRE, which will be 91福利鈥檚 first, will transform 91福利鈥檚 ability to serve as the academic leader for biomedical research in Maine and feed the growing biomedical research industry in Maine. This research will elucidate basic biological mechanisms underlying cell behavior and also has the potential to inform the future treatment of infectious diseases, neuromuscular disorders, and muscle aging and regeneration.鈥

The COBRE award is led by Clarissa Henry, professor of biological sciences in the School of Biology and Ecology and director of the Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering at 91福利.

鈥淭his award will transform the landscape of biomedical research at the University of Maine and foster innovation in the life sciences statewide,鈥 Henry says.

It will primarily support five research projects led by early career investigators from 91福利 and the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, including 91福利鈥檚 Melissa MaginnisJared TalbotJoshua Kelley and Ben King, as well as  at the MDI Bio Lab.

鈥淭he MDI Biological Laboratory is very pleased to collaborate on this Maine-based research initiative,鈥 says MDI Bio Lab President Herman Haller. 鈥淩omain Madelaine鈥檚 work on the cellular mechanisms of muscle regeneration holds great promise for improving the way we age. The COBRE award will accelerate his discoveries and more by university faculty and students.鈥

As program director for the COBRE award, Henry will mentor the research team as they develop their projects.

The award also aims to bolster 91福利鈥檚 ability to serve as the academic leader for biomedical research in the state and feed its growing biomedical research industry through the Institute of Medicine and College of Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture. For example, this award will support the creation of a Microscopy and Image Analysis Core headed by Rob Wheeler, associate professor of microbiology, that will provide access to super-resolution confocal microscopy and support unbiased image analysis.

The award will also support burgeoning biomedical researchers through assistantships in the Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering (GSBSE). Currently, 91福利 is the only institution in the state that grants doctoral degrees in biomedical science and biomedical engineering.

鈥淥ne of the most exciting aspects of this grant is the explicit integration of research with training of the next generation of biomedical scientists,鈥 says Henry. 鈥91福利 has a phenomenal cluster of early career biomedical faculty and I am thrilled that this award will propel their research careers, increase campus and statewide collaboration, and add meaningful undergraduate and graduate research experiences.鈥

The award starts April 5, 2023.
