The Cooperative Forestry Research Unit is seeking research proposals for funding beginning in the summer of 2024. CFRU research focuses on developing applied information/tools that member organizations can use to improve forest management and planning. Proposals and scope of work should address the interests and challenges forest managers face today and in the near future (5-10 years).

Scope of member interests:

Members are surveyed yearly to assess their areas of interest for the RFP. The most recent summary of a member research listening session and may be helpful when forming research proposals specific to CFRU interests. Remote sensing research emerged as the top interest during the session for our members and the following topics were identified as priorities:

  • utilization of remote sensing for improving methods of carbon quantification
  • cost-effective methods of remote sensing and other technologies to supplement data between LiDAR acquisitions
  • using LiDAR & remote sensing to model and map wildlife habitats.

All remote sensing research related to the forestry sector will be considered. Additionally, silviculture is the cornerstone of CFRU’s research portfolio, and we welcome related applied research projects, particularly those leveraging the

Timeline:

  • December 21, 2023, 5:00 PM: letters of intent are due (emailed to regina.smith@maine.edu)
Letters should include a brief description of the research project, outline linkages and benefits to Maine’s forest sector, and a total requested amount for funding. Letters should be no longer than 1 page single-spaced in length. Keep language
as clear and concise as possible.

The CFRU is seeking research pre-proposals now through January 13, 2023. Pre-proposals will be ranked by our advisory committee and if selected, you will be asked to present an overview of your project at our winter meeting on January 26, 2023. If approved, we will ask you to submit a more detailed full proposal and presentation in April. Funding becomes available July 1, 2023.

We are seeking to fund 6-8 projects, running 2-3 years in length, with an annual budget anywhere from $20-45K. Other things to consider when applying: we have 10% overhead costs at the CFRU, our members like to see past CFRU projects or other research leveraged, as well as additional funding sources. It is to your advantage to keep the pre-proposal brief and easy to understand by someone who is not a researcher.Ìý

Based of a recent member survey, areas of particular interest include:

  • Remote sensing research for stand predictions as well as wildlife
  • Silvicultural practices addressing carbon sequestration
  • Plantation studies
  • Carbon and climate studies
  • Forest health topics (white pine weevil, balsam woolly adelgid, white pine needle diseases)
  • Utilizing our existing long-term research network, for nested research projects, in wildlife, silviculture, and remote sensing

Our membership is vast and interests range from industrial forest challenges to conservation research. You can find our most recent prospectus here, with more details on member interests. Want to discuss your research idea specifically before forming a proposal? Email regina.smith@maine.edu.
